It has been a few crazy wonderful weeks! As of today, I have begun my second week as a long-term sub in the Resource Room at Woodcrest Elementary and let me say it has been extremely insightful. The students definitely keep you on your toes and I am finding it interesting to discover where my art room experiences end up assisting me in navigating the ends and outs of this unique environment and its students.
So far, this experience, combined with my art know-how, has helped me to:
One of my favorite experiences so far was in helping a group of students understand polygons, their shapes, their names, etc. During a particular moment of instruction, while attempting to clarify the flexibility that exists when drawing a polygon, I had a student suddenly exclaim, "Hey, it's like we're in art class!" From there she proceeded to draw a flurry of various polygons with no further trouble. I'd have to say when it comes to art integration = mission accomplished!
So far, this experience, combined with my art know-how, has helped me to:
- tackle different problems from alternating viewpoints using various materials.
- understand a student's relation to the subject.
- be patient and flexible when delivering instruction.
- be incredibly understanding of students and their individual uniqueness.
- the power of integrating arts into general subjects.
