It started with a study on the human figure and a talk of what makes art. Students discussed everything from art as a means to be creative, to art as something made from paint and fabric, to even seeing art in the use of architecture and video games. From there, second grade students learned how to draw the human form from stick figures; each student having the chance to pose/model for their classmates. All our steps got rolled into one as we took a look at African American artist and author Faith Ringgold.
Students got a chance to read her book (and even discovered it in the library) and create their own quilt square using Ringgold's book "The Tar Beach" and mixed media piece, "Tar Beach" as inspiration. I love it when art can combined with other disciplines! It helps to bring about a much more richer experience!

It started with some visual improv and now we have moved on to identifying rhythm! Students in Mrs. Caylor's class continue their study of Jazz, this time adding to their piece some BRIGHT, COLORFUL, VISUAL rhythm. Students recognized that a rhythm is a series of patterns and that patterns also exist in art. They learned to "see" a beat as a color and added some visual interest to their piece by thinking of their favorite song and translating from something you hear to something you see. To help on on this path, students got to listen to famed jazz musician Dave Bruebeck and his hit "Take Five".
